Bicycles use strength, energy. It would be nice for 100% of that energy to be converted into speed, but unfortunately, it doesn't work like that.
 
During cycling, energy is lost through 3 factors:

1. Due to air resistance of bicycle and rider.
2. Due to friction between the moving parts of the bike.
3. Due to the rolling resistance of the tyres.

Top level sports cycling and the bicycle industry are always hard at work trying to reduce this energy loss, or to increase the output from the energy used. So frames and parts are made of lighter and lighter materials, and aerodynamics is an essential design aspect: aerodynamic clothing, futuristic helmets and solid wheels. Combined together, these deliver substantial gains in speed, but Vredestein goes even further!
 
Result of Vredestein research: tyres with low rolling resistance
For a long time, the effect of rolling resistance on performance was underestimated. However, research has shown that it has a significant influence. At a speed of 15 km/h, cycling on a flat road and with no wind, the rolling resistance is nearly as great as the wind resistance! So the potential speed gains are substantial. And that is precisely what Vredestein has developed: tyres with a long working life, with low rolling resistance for optimum ride comfort.

Rolling resistance is influenced by the following factors:
 
Deformation of the tyre under load
The degree of deformation can be influenced by inflating the tyre to a greater or lesser extent. A harder tyre has less rolling resistance. At equal pressure, a wide tyre has lower rolling resistance than a narrower tyre. The relative deformation is less for a wide tyre than a narrow one. The contact patch of a wide tyre is short and wide, while it is narrow and long with a narrow tyre. For a wide tyre, air resistance plays an important role.
 
Material properties
The rubber quality plays a role. Natural rubber, by its nature, has low resistance.
 
Frictional loss through contact with the road surface
The wheel diameter (size) also has an influence on the rolling resistance, even if it is less than the influence of the tyre width. A larger wheel gives a marginally lower rolling resistance than a smaller wheel.
 
The internal friction of the inner tube inside the tyre
As a result of the high elasticity of latex inner tubes, the internal friction of the inner tube in the tyre is reduced practically to zero. A 23 mm wide race tyre is the optimum combination between relative deformation, air resistance and ride comfort. With a latex inner tube at the recommended pressure, the rolling resistance is at its lowest.
 
In practice, this means that with Vredestein tyres, 6% of gains can be recorded in speed, or 1.5 km/h, at an average speed of 25 km/h. At lower speeds, the gain is relatively even greater.

The combination of knowledge and experience makes the Black Panther a true All-Mountain tyre. Thanks to the linked tread of the central zone, the tyre rolls exceptionally lightly. And the staggered, angled cleats increase the contact area and give the tyre extra stability, climbing ability and braking power. A specially developed compound gives the outermost row of cleats a lower Shore hardness rating (Tri-Comp X Technology®), so the tyre provides extra grip when cornering and in “off-camber” conditions. The open character of the tread makes the Black Panther suitable for most competition and weather conditions.

(TRICOMP X TECHNOLOGY - Vredestein's experience with the Tri-Comp Technology in racing tires has been transferred to the mountain bike scene, so that these riders can also perform to the maximum. Low rolling resistance, combined with a high degree of grip. By using different compounds in the tread and shoulder, in combination with a specially designed cleat structure, a tire that performs ideally under all conditions is created.)

BULL LOCK - This tyre has it all. The Bull Lock comes in different sizes, making it not only a powerhouse in mud, but also the ideal grip tyre for climbs and descents on rough, rocky terrain. With its wedge-shaped cleats, the Bull Lock provides maximum grip and braking power. And the cleat structure gives the Bull Lock optimal discharging capacity. The dual cleat across the shoulder of the tyre gives extra grip when taking corners and in “off-camber” situations. The Bull Lock performs superbly in the mud. In the special narrower version, the tread cuts through the top layer of the mud to look for traction in the solid ground beneath.
