Riccardo Bigolin, chairman of the company, founded Selle Royal in 1956. For more than 40 years, Selle Royal has made comfortable saddles for millions of cyclists throughout the world. Their history is one of original design and radical innovation, and growth from a small workshop to a major industry which is today a world leader in the manufacture of bicycle saddles. Through the 80's and 90's Selle Royal became a major partner for the biggest manufacturers of recreational bicycles. The comfort needed on these bicycles helped Selle Royal develop a great experience, which could be transferred to all cycling disciplines with the new LOOKIN and fi'zi:k brands.

Today, the sophisticated manufacturing technology at Selle Royal can produce no less than 72,000 saddles daily. The production facility covers 20,000 m2, and is in full compliance with the most modern criteria regarding safety in the workplace and respect for the environment.

Selle Royal exports its saddles to 32 countries world-wide. Selle Royal is the choice of many of the world's most important and prestigious bicycle manufacturers. Their saddles have won numerous design awards, and are today the subject of scientific research in the bio-engineering laboratories of major European universities.

Selle Royal's success in the production of comfortable saddles is due to a great extent to the employment of an innovative padding material: Royalgel. Developed by Bayer in Germany, this polyurethane matrix gel, is now exclusively licensed to Selle Royal for the bicycle industry and to other companies of the same group for other applications. Selle Royal can rely on Royal Medica's experience in comfort, since this sister company is a leader in the production of anti-bedsore mattresses, cushions and other products meant to make life easier for those who have serious problems. Technogel is a new joint venture between the Royal Medica and the German company Otto Bock, leader in the production of prosthesis and orthopedic products, as well as polyurethane parts for the automotive industry. The focus of Technogel is to develop gel parts for the office furniture and shoe industries.

In order to satisfy the customers and to help reduce the quality claim rate to less than 0,1%, the testing and evaluation of more than 100 new or re-styled products each year keeps Selle Royal's Quality Control Laboratory busy full time. In addition to testing the actual comfort of a new saddle, Selle Royal's products undergo a minimum number of tests according to the international standards of quality and safety (UNI, ISO, DIN, NFR 30001, NFR 30004...)

ROYALGEL - Selle Royal has the world wide license of Royalgel for the bicycle industry. This polyurethane matrix product is an excellent padding material for saddles because it combines pressure distribution capacity with shock absorbing power. Moreover, it's the only gel which doesn't break, doesn't harden, and doesn't age.

Comparative pressure distribution tests prove that Royalgel™ padding guaranties the highest level of comfort, reducing pressure peaks by up to 40%. A better distribution of the weight on the entire surface of a Royalgel padded saddle relieves both the prostate/pubis area and the "sit bones".


ELASTOMER - are polyurethane-based materials which absorb shocks, and have replaced the traditional metal spring. Safe, silent and permanently non-deformable, an elastomer can absorb even the severest and most unexpected shocks, because it works vertically and horizontally. Moreover, a child sitting in the back doesn't get his fingers caught!


ROYAL VACUUM SYSTEM (RVS) - enables Selle Royal to achieve any desired anatomic shape, according to scientific principles of ergonomy. RVS is an automatic production process in which the Royalgel and polyurethane foam padding is injected directly into the saddle mould. The padding adheres to the saddle without the use of adhesives or metal anchor systems, and over time is not subject to detachment or shifting.
 

ELASTOMER PROTECTION SYSTEM (EPS) or plastic scuff guards are lateral bumpers protecting the saddle from scuffing in the even of fall.

 





ERGOGELTM is a range of anatomical saddles with Royalgel. The range features 3 anatomical designs for men and 3 for women, to accommodate different styles.




 The ERGOGEL is a line of anatomically designed saddles delivering a gender specific solution to men and women, considering the anatomical difference between men and women. It is also designed to suit the style of riding, Athletic (Racing Bike), Moderate (MTB) and Relaxed (City/Tour bike).

The ERGOGEL Men's saddles feature a 35mm wide central depression, which relieves the pressure from the prostate and reduces the compression of the pudendal arteries and nerves, optimizing the blood flow to the penis and eliminating feelings of numbness.

The ERGOGEL Women's saddles features a narrower depression, which avoids the compression of the tissue at the centre of the saddle. With the pressure distribution effect of the gel, the outer genital are gently supported.

 RESPIRO is Selle Royal's line of dedicated to the demanding cyclist. It features the
innovative Cool Cover and a Ventilation Channel which also relieves pressure from the genital area.

 In hot weather, when leaving a bike in the sun or riding for a long period of time a saddle can warm up. Rising above the rider’s skin temperature, the saddle creates an unpleasant feeling of perspiration and discomfort. Eventually this discomfort can turn into pain. Respiro, meaning breathe in Italian, avoids this by keeping the saddle 25% cooler thanks to the Cool Microtex and the Ventilation Channel. Like the Ergogel saddle, the Respiro is designed with gender specific and solution to men and women.
