Legend has it that a young man of 19 years old, called John Boultbee Brooks bought himself one of those new fangled velocipedes. He would have cut a quite a dashing figure back in the day, but that was not all he cut; the wooden saddle was excruciatingly uncomfortable. Now his father made leather saddles for horses - and indeed he and his friends normally went to work. So the young Brooks set about designing and developing a comfortable saddle from the leather in his father's workshop.

The rest as they say is history.

Brooks experience in saddle making goes right back to the beginning - back to the period of solid tires - and is unequalled by any house in the world.

SPECIAL - Historically BROOKS Saddles were all made with regular steel rivets. Racers in the tours would have their BROOKS Saddles conditioned and riveted with larger ones to make them last longer. Coppers rivets in fact are gentler to the leather top, so a few decades ago this practice was adopted in the manufacturing at BROOKS. This is how the SPECIAL range was born. Each of the 9 copper rivets on the SPECIAL Saddles is hand hammered with great care by skilful craftsmen.

UNIQUE - Spanning more than a century of history, BROOKS has preserved some models which are unique in their construction. Each saddle in this range needs a different workmanship or frame construction which is specific to that particular model, making it UNIQUE. Most of the models have a double or triple rail construction, like the B66, their most popular model in the BROOKS UNIQUE range, dating back as early as 1927. The SWALLOW has single rails, but a very peculiar construction of the leather top.

CLASSIC - The CLASSIC range includes many of our best selling models for the modern cyclist, since all saddles have single rails and are thus compatible with micro-adjust seat-posts. The B17 is the most popular saddle in the BROOKS CLASSIC range. It is certainly the oldest BROOKS model and longest living saddle in cycling history. This icon has been sold as far back as 1896 and for over a century never went out of production. Many of these models are available also in the AGED and IMPERIAL lines.

AGED - "Comfort from Day 1" and "Immediate Break-In" well define the AGED Saddles. This range has been recently added to the BROOKS Heritage selection to address the needs of those cyclists who are eager to ride on a Leather Saddle, but disincline to take time to gain the lifetime comfort of their traditional models. The AGED Saddles have skillfully blended oils and waxes, massaged into the hide. This vegetable tanned leather guarantees a softer saddle from the very first ride.

IMPERIAL - In the 1890 catalogue, the oldest we preserve in our archives, BROOKS presents most of the saddles with "registered cutting a sure preventive to all perinea pressure". Over 100 years ahead of today's saddle manufacturers, John Boultbee Brooks had already found the solution to a nowadays well known problem. Eventually this line of saddles went out of production in the 1950s. We reintroduced it on our most successful models with an improved and dedicated solution for men and for women.

BARBICAN MESSENGER BAG - In 1990 J.B. Brooks filed to patents related to improvements in satchels, knapsacks and the like. These patents guaranteed more equal distribution of the load over the straps and more stability of the bag whilst cycling. With this in mind, BROOKS developed their new BARBICAN Messenger Bag, featuring a shoulder belt which can be easily secured around the waist during the ride. Once adjusted to the desired length, depending on the height and waist of the cyclist, the belt can be kept loose to carry the bag over or across the shoulder while walking. For increased stability during the ride, the belt can be easily fastened around the waist simply pulling the two ends of the belt and locking them at the center with the "Sam Brown" fixing.

BRICK LANE ROLL-UP PANNIERS - The ROLL-UP PANNIERS are inspired by the Cyclist's Holdalls, first featured in the 1890s catalogue. As originals, the new panniers can be rolled up or easily released when needed. On the top of the bag attachment to the bicycle rack these panniers feature a crossed elastic to fasten additional objects to carry during transit. The ROLL-UP PANNIERS are "self closing", as they feature magnets on the flaps.

CHALLENGE TOOL BAG - Patented in 1896, the CHALLENGE TOOL BAG is for fitment to the rear of a saddle bearing bag loops. It features buckles that are located within the hold itself. Whilst fastening the bag, the strap that secures the unit encircles the tools it carries, preventing them from rattling during transit.

D-SHAPE TOOL BAG - The D-SHAPED BAG was featured in BROOKS catalogues as far back a 1910. This innovative design features a two piece construction which, whilst the outer sleeve remains permanently attached to the saddle, has an inner purse that may be removed so that its owner may retain it, thus securing its valuable contents. The purse is attached to the sleeve by a "Sam Brown" fixing, preventing it from sliding out, even under extreme conditions.
